While traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon—named by the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes for the season when the ancient lake sturgeon was most abundant—this moon has also been called the Ricing Moon, Green Corn Moon, Corn Moon, and Lightning Moon, with each name celebrating the harvests, changing seasons, and rhythms of the natural world. We embrace the name Mountain Shadows Moon to honor our own landscape and indigenous peoples of the PNW, where the lengthening shadows cast across the mountains quietly announce summer's end and autumn's approach.
